The short version

Niàn asks for the camera and nothing else. It has no account system, collects no analytics, and sends nothing you capture off your phone.

Camera

Niàn uses the camera to look at Chinese text you point it at. Camera frames are held in memory while a capture is on screen and are processed on the device. They are not uploaded, they are not written to your photo library, and they are not retained after the capture is dismissed. Camera access is granted by you and can be withdrawn at any time in Settings.

On-device processing

Text recognition, word segmentation, pīnyīn, and dictionary lookups all run on the device, using the operating system's own frameworks and a dictionary bundled with the application. Full-sentence translation in TRANSLATE mode is performed by the on-device translation service built into iOS; iOS may download its own Chinese–English language model from Apple the first time it is used, which is an operating-system function and does not include anything you captured.

No account, no analytics, no sync

There is no account system, no sign-in, and no cloud sync. Niàn contains no analytics, tracking, or advertising SDKs, and does no usage reporting of any kind. The fluency setting Niàn derives from use is a single number stored locally on the device, and you can change it yourself in Settings.

Purchases

Niàn is a one-time purchase made through the App Store. Payment, receipts, and refunds are handled entirely by Apple; Tangential Technologies, LLC does not see or store your payment details. Apple's own privacy policy governs that transaction.

Data control

Removing the Niàn application removes the application's locally stored data according to the device operating system's normal behavior. Because nothing is uploaded, there is no server-side copy to request or delete.

If a future version of Niàn handles information differently, this page is updated to describe what that version does.
